The role of sport-specific play and practice during childhood in the development of adolescent Finnish team sport athletes

Abstract: This study sought to understand the role of sport-specific play and practice in the development of adolescent team sport athletes in the Finnish sports development system. Participants were male, 15-year-old soccer (n ¼ 141), ice hockey (n ¼ 204), and basketball (n ¼ 96) players, divided into three groups based on the amount of sport-specific play and practice experienced during childhood. “…Using athletes' journals of daily individual deliberate practice (eg, self-directed practice to improve skills), Vink et al 59 revealed a positive and reciprocal relationship between deliberate practice and intrinsic motivation. Researchers also examined current athletes' early childhood and adolescent sport involvement through retrospective interviews assessing amounts of sport practice51 or comparing involvement in sport-specific practice and play 54. For example, athletes who accumulated more hours of practice reported higher integrated regulation, although they did not report differences in other forms of motivation, or based on involvement in sport-specific play 54…”

“…Beneath the characteristics of a specific sport domain, country- or culture-specific environments may also contribute to inconsistencies in the described debate ( Baker et al, 2003b ; Storm et al, 2012 ; Suppiah et al, 2015 ; Forsman et al, 2016 ). Although Ford et al (2012) did find similarities between development activities of elite soccer players from different countries, Araújo et al (2010) emphasised that specific environment constraints such as in Brazilian football (i.e., football played with adapted norms and rules in a variety of locations), may lead to specific pathways to expertise.…”

“…In a systematic review, Coutinho et al (in press) have also indicated that there may be 46 potential negative consequences from early engagement in deliberate practice stimulated by 47 undertaking such a vast number of hours of intense training during early development, a 48 possibility acknowledged by Ericsson et al (1993, see p.371). These consequences include 49 burnout, dropout, overuse injuries and lower levels of attainment (see also Baker,Cobley,& 50 Fraser-Thomas, 2009; Forsman, Blompvist, Davids, Konttinen, & Liukkonen, 2016;Fraser-51 Thomas, Côté, & Deakin, 2008a, 2008bLaw, Côté, & Ericsson, 2007;Wiersma, 2000). 52…”
