Abstract Background Since the start of the new Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak in December 2019, pharmacists worldwide are playing a key role adopting innovative strategies to minimize the adverse impact of the pandemic. Objectives To identify and describe core services provided by the pharmacist during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods A literature search was performed in MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, and LILACS for studies published between December 1st, 2019 and May 20th, 2020 without language restriction. Studies that reported services provided by pharmacists during the COVID-19 pandemic were included. Two independent authors performed study selection and data extraction with a consensus process. The pharmacist's intervention identified in the included studies were described based on key domains in the DEPICT v.2. Results A total of 1,189 records were identified, of which 11 studies fully met the eligibility criteria. Most of them were conducted in the United States of America (n=4) and China (n=4). The most common type of publication were letters (n=4) describing the workplace of the pharmacist in hospitals (n=8). These findings showed the different roles of pharmacists during the COVID-19 pandemic, such as disease prevention and infection control, adequate storage and drug supply, patient care and support for healthcare professionals. Pharmacists' interventions were mostly conducted for healthcare professionals and patients (n=7), through one-to-one contact (n=11), telephone (n=6) or video conference (n=5). The pharmacists' main responsibility was to provide drug information for healthcare professionals (n=7) as well as patient counseling (n=8). Conclusions A reasonable number of studies that described the role of the pharmacists during the COVID-19 pandemic were found. All studies reported actions taken by pharmacists, although without providing a satisfactory description. Thus, future research with more detailed description as well as an evaluation of the impact of pharmacist intervention is needed in order to guide future actions in this and-or other pandemic. Objectives: For decades, the role of hospital pharmacists has been instrumental in elevating pharmacy practice worldwide. Recently, the Hospital Pharmacy Section of the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP), the European Association of Hospital Pharmacists (EAHP), and the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) updated their statements about the future role and responsibilities of the pharmacy executive in hospitals and health systems. A series of surveys were conducted around the globe to better understand the current state of hospital pharmacy practice. The purpose of these surveys was to identify challenges in hospital pharmacy practice and to develop improvement strategies. The objective of this national survey is to evaluate hospital pharmacy practice in Lebanon. Methods: A cross-sectional observational study was performed among pharmacists working in hospital settings in Lebanon, from January through June 2016. Based on a literature review, a questionnaire to elicit Lebanese hospital pharmacists’ practice was developed. Results: The results showed a nonsignificant difference between university teaching and nonuniversity teaching hospitals in the processes of drug procurement, preparation, dispensing, and drug administration. However, statistically significant differences were observed between university teaching and nonuniversity teaching hospitals with respect to having clinical pharmacists ( P < .001) and highly qualified personnel ( P < .005). Pharmacy services in teaching hospitals seemed to be more advanced cooperating with affiliated medical schools. Furthermore, teaching hospitals were more likely to have pharmacists providing information about the safety of the medications used ( P = .029). Although not statistically significant, there was a higher trend toward having a designated champion for medication safety ( P = .052). Conclusion: The results of our survey showed that teaching hospitals were more compliant with the International Statements of Hospital Pharmacy Practice compared with nonteaching hospitals. There is room for improvement especially if the application of the accreditation standards for safe hospital pharmacy practice becomes mandatory for all hospitals, which is expected to standardize pharmacy practice and secure both medication and patient safety.

Background: Physicians appear to positively perceive pharmacists, but the perception of future physicians on clinical hospital pharmacists is largely unknown. By identifying medical students’ perceptions, educational efforts could be developed to target areas for improvement and allow for optimal utilization of pharmacists. Objective: To identify medical students’ perception of clinical pharmacists in the hospital setting. Methods: A 27-item survey that analyzed medical students’ knowledge and attitudes toward clinical hospital pharmacists was sent via email to students at eight medical schools in Ohio. Survey items assessed participant’s past interactions with a pharmacist (5 items), understanding of clinical pharmacists’ roles and responsibilities (7 items), and current perceptions of clinical pharmacists (7 items). Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and qualitative data using thematic analysis. Results: There were 124 participants across 3 medical schools. Students expressed that clinical pharmacists are essential on the healthcare team to support and maintain a patient’s health (Mean ± SD = 4.47 ± 0.829). They were neutral or disagreed that clinical pharmacists are qualified to diagnose a variety of conditions (Mean ± SD = 2.62 ± 1.017) and were neutral or agreed that a clinical pharmacist’s role differs from a community pharmacist’s role (Mean ± SD = 3.95 ± 0.659). In the qualitative analysis, medical students reported that they perceive clinical pharmacists to be medication experts (N=28, 66.7%), important members of the healthcare team (N=23, 54.8%), and useful resources for answering drug-related questions (N=15, 35.7%). Conclusions: Medical students reflected a positive attitude toward clinical pharmacists and affirmed the need for pharmacists to provide medication expertise in the hospital setting. However, many medical students were not fully aware of the responsibilities that a clinical pharmacist provides and could benefit from education on the scope of a pharmacist’s practice.
