The Satellite Application Facility for Land Surface Analysis

Abstract: Information on land surface properties finds applications in a range of areas related to weather forecasting, environmental research, hazard management and climate monitoring. Remotely sensed observations yield the only means of supplying land surface information with adequate time sampling and a wide spatial coverage. The aim of the Satellite Application Facility for Land Surface Analysis (Land-SAF) is to take full advantage of remotely sensed data to support land, land-atmosphere and biosphere applications, … Show more

“…An overview of the LSA-SAF products, brief description of the algorithms and validation results are provided by TRIGO et al (2011). VGT-S (Synthesis) products provide daily and 10-day Maximum Value Composite synthesis of NDVI that are corrected for atmospheric effects.…”

“…In the methodology proposed here, ET 0 relies essentially on daily values of downward solar flux at the surface obtained from the Spinning Enhanced Visible and Infrared Imager (SEVIRI) radiometer onboard Meteosat Second Generation (MSG), provided by the Satellite Application Facility on Land Surface Analysis (hereafter LANDSAF; see also Trigo et al, 2010). If the approach analyzed here to derive ET 0 proves successfully, the LANDSAF will initiate the retrieval and distribution in near real time or off-line of that parameter from SEVIRI/MSG, as described below.…”

“…The IAASARS/NOA system uses an in-house SVM-based LST retrieval algorithm [34,35] that utilizes as input the cloud-free TIR radiances from the 10.8 and 12 µm SEVIRI spectral bands and emissivity information from the MOD11A2 data product [33]. The evaluation of the employed SEVIRI LST data was performed in [35] using concurrent and collocated, high quality (accuracy of 1-2 • C) independent Meteosat-10 SEVIRI data from LandSAF (Land Surface Analysis Satellite Application Facility [36]) and showed a mean difference of −0.19 • C, a RMSE of 0.5 • C and a Pearson's correlation coefficient (Rho) of 99.8%.…”
