INTRODUCTION: Sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) solutions with added wetting agents are advertised to dissolve necrotic tissue in root canals faster than their counterparts without a lowered surface tension. This was tested in the current study, and the null hypothesis formulated was that there was no difference between a commercially available NaOCl solution with a lowered surface tension (Chlor-XTRA; Vista Dental Products, Racine, WI) and a counterpart containing the same amount of available chlorine without added wetting agents regarding the soft tissue that remains in oval-shaped canals after mechanical preparation and irrigation. METHODS: Formerly vital extracted teeth (N = 44, 22 pairs) with similar anatomy were radiographically paired and chemomechanically prepared. In 1 tooth from each pair, a 5.25% NaOCl solution with reduced surface tension was used; in the other, a pure, technical-grade NaOCl solution of 5.25% was used. The percentage of remaining pulp tissue (PRPT) was histologically assessed in root cross-sections. The non-Gaussian raw data were subjected to Kruskal-Wallis and MannWhitney U tests to verify the respective effect of the cross-section level and solution on the PRPT. The relationship between the cross-section level and the PRPT was estimated by the Spearman correlation test. The alpha-type error was set at 5%. RESULTS: The cross-section level significantly influenced the PRPT (P < .05), whereas the PRPT was not influenced by the solution used (P > .05). A significant inverse correlation was found between the cross-section level and the PRPT (P < .05, r = -0.330). The lower the distance to the apex, the higher the PRPT regardless of the solution used. CONCLUSIONS: Contrary to the advertised statement, the dental solution with a reduced surface tension did not dissolve vital pulp tissue in oval root canals any better than a conventional NaOCl solution of similar strength. Closer to the apex, pulp tissue dissolution is less efficient irrespective of the solution.

Objective: This study used microcomputed tomography (micro-CT) to compare the volumes of voids and gaps in curved root canals instrumented and filled using various techniques. Methods: Twenty extracted mandibular first molars with two curved mesial root canals were used. Root canals were instrumented using a self-adjusting file (SAF) or Revo-S file system. For standardization, mesiobuccal canals were instrumented with SAF and mesiolingual canals were instrumented with Revo-S in each root. The canals were divided into four experimental groups (n=10 in each). The canals were then filled via cold lateral compaction (CLC) or a thermoplasticized injectable technique (TT) using gutta-percha and AH Plus root canal sealer. The roots were scanned with a micro-CT, and the volumes of the voids and gaps were calculated using three-dimensional (3D) micro-CT images. Data were analyzed using unpaired t-and Kruskal-Wallis tests. A value of P < 0.05 was considered significant. Results: None of the tested techniques provided void-or gap-free fillings. Nevertheless, the SAF showed more gap formation than the Revo-S, and TT showed higher gap formation in all experimental groups. These differences, however, were not statistically significant (p>0.05). Conclusion:The SAF and Revo-S rotary file systems yielded comparable results. No statistically significant difference was found between the results of the various instrumentation and filling techniques.

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of two different self-adjusting file (SAF) working times and three different chelating agents on the push-out bond strength of root canal fillings in oval root canals. Materials and Methods: Eighty mandibular premolars were selected and distributed into 8 groups (n=10): 4 min SAF (G1), 4 min SAF + 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) (G2), 4 min SAF + 10% citric acid (CA) (G3), 4 min SAF + 1% peracetic acid (PAA) (G4), 6 min SAF (G5), 6 min SAF + 17% EDTA (G6), 6 min SAF + 10% CA (G7), and 6 min SAF + 1% PAA (G8). The root canals were filled using guttapercha and AH Plus root canal sealer, and the teeth were prepared for the push-out assessments using 1.0 mm thick root slices. Loading was performed with a universal testing machine at a speed of 0.5 mm/min; and then, collected data were analyzed statistically (α=0.05). Results: While the different chelating agents significantly affected the push-out bond strength of the root canal filling (p<0.05), the different SAF working times did not (p>0.05). There were no significant differences among the groups in the apical and middle thirds of the roots (p>0.05). In the coronal thirds, G6 and G8 indicated significantly greater bond strength values than G1 and G5 (p<0.05). Conclusion: According to the results, the 4 and 6 min SAF working times did not affect the bond strength of the root canal filling. PAA and EDTA can be recommended for root canal irrigation after SAF usage.
