Abstract:Sand is a particulate material but is treated as a continuum solid in some engineering analyses. This approach is proven to be acceptable when dealing with geotechnical structures, provided an adequate factor of safety is applied so that there is no risk of failure. However, the continuum approach does not account for the effect of interparticle forces on the micro–macro behaviour of sand. Sand could be modelled as a particulate material using the discrete element method (DEM), taking into account its discrete… Show more

scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
