The SFXC software correlator for very long baseline interferometry: algorithms and implementation

Abstract: In this paper a description is given of the SFXC software correlator, developed and maintained at the Joint Institute for VLBI in Europe (JIVE). The software is designed to run on generic Linux-based computing clusters. The correlation algorithm is explained in detail, as are some of the novel modes that software correlation has enabled, such as wide-field VLBI imaging through the use of multiple phase centres and pulsar gating and binning. This is followed by an overview of the software architecture. Finally,… Show more

“…The data from the telescopes were correlated on the EVN software correlator at the Joint Institute for VLBI in Europe (SFXC; Keimpema et al 2015). Each of the 16 MHz baseband channels was correlated with 32 frequency points and onesecond coherent integrations.…”

“…correlating all scans with a coarse resolution on the full bandwidth and the maser scans with a high resolution on a narrow bandwidth containing the spectral features. This feature is routinely available on both DiFX (Deller et al 2011) and SFXC (Keimpema et al 2015) correlators used at most VLBI arrays.…”

“…The observations target a 15 arcmin diameter area centred on the HDF-N. This survey implements the "multiple simultaneous phase centre observing" mode of the SFXC correlator (Keimpema et al 2015) to image a 7.5 arcmin radius area by simultaneously correlating on 582 phase centres. This enables us to achieve µJy rms noise levels with milliarcsecond resolution across the whole of the primary beam.…”

“…In recent years, the introduction of software-based correlators has established the concept of "multiple simultaneous phase centre observing" (Deller et al 2011;Keimpema et al 2015). This method uses multiple phase centres with a coarser temporal and frequency resolution to produce a narrow field data set per…”
