“…The samples used in this study for DNA investigations are sub-sets of the dust particles vacuumed from the back of the Turin Shroud (TS), which were kindly provided in 2010 by Giulio Fanti (Dept. of Industrial Engineering, University of Padua, Italy), who in turn received them personally from Giovanni Riggi di Numana in 2006 12 18 (see also Supplementary Document S1 ). In particular, four samples were originally collected on filters in 1978 from four distinct areas of the back of TS, corresponding to the hands (filter E), face (filter F), feet (filter G) and glutei (filter H) of the TS male image 12 .…”

“…On the other hand, others still think that it is a fake, referencing the 1988 radiocarbon result that debatably declared it Medieval. More recent studies in fact demonstrated that it is compatible with the age in which Jesus lived in Palestine [6,7].…”

“…It is interesting to comment a piece of John's Gospel (20,(6)(7)(8) A part from the unhappy translation of "strips of linen" from the Greek "othonia" that simply indicates "linens" at plural, probably in reference to the set of TS, chin bandage, sudarium, and, perhaps, also rolled linens put at the corpse's sides, the best explanation for the authors is the following: probably both a sudarium wrapping the face to better protect it and a chin bandage to close the mouth of Jesus (placed, around the chin and the top of the head) were used, see fi gure 6.…”

“…By contrast to the 14 C results, essentially all other data on the Shroud, including floral, numismatic, fabric and historical data, point to a much earlier origin. Recent research by Fanti and Malfi using both FT-IR and Raman spectroscopy and mechanical property testing [5] date the Shroud to Christ's time. Fanti and Malfi's dating results are: FTIR 300 BC ± 400 yrs, Raman 200 BC ± 500 yrs, and mechanical testing 372 AD ± 400 yrs [5].…”
