There is much popular interest in the rise of emerging powers in Asia, especially China and India, and also other countries. However, as yet there is very little committed academic analysis about what the rise of Asia would mean for Asians, and for the world. The 'Emerging Asia' book series publishes monographs and edited volumes that address the impact of the rise of individual countries (e.g., China, India, Korea, Indonesia) on Asia's international politics, the role of Asia in global affairs; and the promise and possibility of Asian ideas and norms influencing a post-Western world order. The series encourages comparative analysis of intra-Asian relations (e.g., Sino-Indian relations, India-ASEAN relations); and both discipline-based research and inter-disciplinary research.

In 1936, the Japanese government announced its official policy of advancing to the south under the name of Nanshinseisaku, and since 1941 it began to invade Southeast Asia. However, when the historical background is examined, it is seen that Japan's ambitions towards the south of dates back to ancient times. In this context, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who was a leader after completing the 16th-century unification of Japan, planned to capture not only north of Japan but also the south. In accordance with this purpose, Hideyoshi sent letters the leaders of the countries in the south of Japan. By letters, he demand tribute and showed that he had intended an invasion. In this study, when and how took place the first contacts between Japan and South Seas has been examined in detail. Also it has been tried to be revealed that Japan's expansionist policy did not start in modern times, it dated back to ancient times.

The aim of this article is to throw the worldwide mission efforts of the old Society of Jesus—the order from its implementation in 1540 to its dissolution in 1773—into sharper relief by applying a new analytical frame to it. The approach taken will be to view the Society as trying to establish a form of dominion over its extra-European converts that may be described as spiritual empire-building.1To this purpose it will first sketch the theoretical framework of a spiritual empire, and then evaluate whether the old Society of Jesus may be taken to fit it either on an organizational level or in its treatment of its converts.
