The slow electrooculogram oscillation in malignant choroidal melanoma

Abstract: Electrooculographic recordings were performed in a series of patients with malignant choroidal melanoma. The amplitudes of the light peaks were reduced in all cases compared with the recordings of the normal fellow eyes. The amount of reduction of the light peaks appeared to be dependent on localization of the tumor. The electrooculograms of eyes with tumors of the posterior pole were found to be reduced significantly. Eyes with malignant melanomas located in the peripheral fundus displayed minor reductions.

“…Rupture of Bruch's membrane did not influence the EOG classification, nor did we observe an influence of tumor localization on the EOG recordings. This is in contrast with the findings of Thaler and associates in 9 patients [11].…”

“…This might be related to the origin of the bioelectrical charge from EPR, meaning that the posterior pole of the globe has a maximum of negative charges while the part of the globe corresponding to the ciliary body does not vary with light adaptation (5-8). Thaler and co-workers also noticed that EOG values were closely related to the position of the lesion relative to the posterior retinal pole, reporting only one tumor of the ciliary body with an AI ratio within the limits of normal eyes (15). Not even analysis according to the histological type of melanoma -epithelioid and mixed forms being more malignant than spindle tumors -showed up any significant differences.…”
