The SOCS-1 -1478CA/del Polymorphism is not Associated with Colorectal Cancer or Age at Onset in Turkish Subjects

Abstract: Background: Suppressor of cytokine signaling (SOCS)-1 acts as a key regulator of many cytokine signaling pathways and its abnormal expression has been identified in several human malignancies, suggesting potential roles in carcinogenesis. The aim of this study was to investigate any association between the functional SOCS-1 -1478CA>del polymorphism and colorectal cancer (CC) as well as age at onset in a Turkish clinical sample. Materials and Methods: A total of 122 subjects were enrolled in this case-control s… Show more

“…A polymorphism in the SOCS1 promoter region (-1478 CA>del) has been reported to increase SOCS1 expression in atopic asthma (127), and has been associated with breast and gastric cancer, as well as with a poorer outcome in colon cancer (128)(129)(130)(131). The effect of this polymorphism remains unclear, although it does not appear to be linked to tumor suppression.…”

“…Studies of the genetic polymorphisms in the SOCS family of genes in solid tumor are not extensive. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the SOCS1 and SOCS3 genes have been analyzed in colorectal cancer patients 23 - 24 . However, no association of these SNPs and cancer development has been found.…”
