The solution behavior of hydrophobically associating zwitterionic polymer in salt water

Abstract: The acrylamide-based hydrophobically associating zwitterionic polymer was prepared, which was composed of dimethyldodecyl-allyl ammonium chloride as hydrophobic group and carboxyl betaine 2-(4-acrylamido-propyl-dimethyl ammonic)-sodium acetate as functional group. Hydrophobically associating polyacrylamide (HAPAM) was also prepared for comparative study. The behaviors of polymers in pure water and salt solutions were investigated by the means of apparent viscosity test, laser light scattering, atomic force mic… Show more

“…1 In dilute solution, macromolecules mainly associate intramolecularly, which reduces the hydrodynamic volume. 3,[11][12][13][14][15][16] This feature allows amphoteric hydrophobically associating polyacrylamides to be applicable at high-salt concentrations. Hence, the hydrodynamic volume increases and the apparent viscosity increases signicantly.…”

“…With breakthroughs in the polymer-flooding technology on offshore oilfields, hydrophobic associated polymers that are suitable for ordinary offshore heavy oilfields have been designed [9][10][11]. The mechanism of hydrophobic association improves the property of the polymer solution but increases the difficulty in dissolving it in water [12,13]. This is because a small amount of hydrophobic groups on the macromolecular chain of hydrophobically associating polymer will block the entry of water molecules, thus prolonging the dissolution time of the polymer [14,15].…”

“…Hydrophobically associating polymer is a special kind of polymer containing main chain macromolecules and a small amount of hydrophobic side chains, due to its excellent temperature resistance and salt resistance properties, which is widely used in oil and gas development, engineering materials, industrial coatings, sewage sludge, drug‐controlled release, and other fields …”
