The Somatic Marker Hypothesis and Sexual Decision Making: Understanding the Role of Iowa Gambling Task Performance and Daily Sexual Arousal on the Sexual Behavior of Gay and Bisexual Men

Abstract: Background The sexual decision-making literature suggests that sexual arousal and behavior are associated. The somatic marker hypothesis suggests that individual neuropsychological differences in decision making, as measured by the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT), may moderate these associations; however, this hypothesis has yet to be tested with event-level sexual behavior data. Purpose We hypothesized that (a) daily sexual arousal would be positively associated with likelihood of engaging in sex and condomless anal… Show more

“…In contrast, several studies have also found that better decision-making performance, on the IGT, is associated with greater engagement in sexual behavior (Rendina, Millar, Dash, Feldstein Ewing, & Parsons, 2018;Wardle, Gonzalez, Bechara, & Martin-Thormeyer, 2010). Among a sample of men who have sex with men, IGT performance moderated the association between sexual arousal and sexual engagement.…”

“…That is, the above four papers are the only papers identified in our search that actually seek to model trajectories of CSB over time. We also noted that three studies made use of intensive longitudinal methods such as daily diary studies Rendina et al, 2018;Wordecha et al, 2018). However, no studies made use of more recent advances in experience sampling, ecological momentary assessment, or ambulatory assessment methods.…”
