The Soret Effect: A Review of Recent Experimental Results

Abstract: In the first part of the paper, we recall what the Soret effect is, together with its applications in science and industry. We emphasize the need to have a reliable data base for the Soret coefficient. Next we review the different techniques to measure the Soret coefficient (elementary Soret cell, beam deflection technique, thermal diffusion forced Rayleigh scattering technique, convective coupling and, in particular, the onset of convection in horizontal layers and the thermogravitational method). Results are… Show more

“…Usually the Soret coefficient is of order 0.6 − 1.5 [31], but the overall size of the Soret effect is believed to be very small in liquids and electrolytes [32]. Therefore the ion flux induced by temperature gradients is neglected compared to the one caused by electric currents and gradients in concentrations.…”

“…It should be noted that this improvement is largely due to the fact that experimental measurements of this property, which are hard to handle because of thermal convection, have been strongly improved during the last decade and provide now consistent values using different experimental techniques 10 .…”

“…However, liquid sampling required in this method may disturb the diffusive process. 16 For the second group, convectionless state is crucial for the measurements. The sampling problem exists in the standard Soret cell, 16 where liquid is placed between two differentially heated copper plates.…”

The sampling problem exists in the standard Soret cell, 16 where liquid is placed between two differentially heated copper plates. Modern techniques based on optical methods of observation do not perturb the diffusive process.…”
