The Sphinx Crest in the Ribchester Hoard

Abstract: A review of the account of the discovery of the Ribchester hoard in 1796 leads to the conclusion that the figure forming a crest was a sphinx but that it was unlikely to have been attached to the helmet in the hoard. The hoard is therefore likely to have been composed of material for reuse.
