The stiffness parameter β assessed by an ultrasonic phase-locked echo-tracking system is associated with plaque formation in the common carotid artery

Abstract: The stiffness parameter β is associated with plaque formation in the CCA, especially in subjects with a normal IMT. This could potentially be used as a predictor for plaque formation.

“…Ultrasound examination was performed during the health check-up to measure the intima-media thickness (IMT) and determine plaque formation in carotid arteries. The results of the ultrasound examinations were reviewed mutually by two or three well-trained ultrasonographers after the health check-up to improve reliability; the details of this procedure have been described elsewhere [ 15 ]. We measured the maximum (max) IMT in both the right and left common carotid arteries (CCA), approximately 20 mm from the bifurcation, as recommended in the guidelines for the ultrasound evaluation of carotid artery lesions [ 16 ].…”

“…The mean value of the right and left max IMT was used for subsequent statistical analyses. The occurrence of plaques was defined as a focal raised lesion in either the right or left CCA, based on similar definitions used in earlier studies [ 15 , 17 , 18 ].…”

“…The higher SI value of bilateral common carotid arteries was used to assess arterial stiffness. This approach could reflect more accurately the severity of arterial stiffness than one-side artery and has been used in previous studies [ 43 ].…”

“…Anthropometric measurements of the body height and weight were obtained and used to calculate the body mass index (BMI, kg/m 2 ). Ultrasound examinations were performed to measure the intima-media thickness (IMT) and to determine plaque formation in the carotid arteries as described [32][33][34][35] . The mean value of the right and left max IMT was used for the statistical analyses.…”
