The structure and chemical composition of the nematode cuticle. Observations on some oxyurids andAscaris

Abstract: Studies of the cuticle ofAspiculuris tetrapterawith both the light and the electron microscopes have shown that there are three basic layers, namely the cortex, which consists of an outer and an inner layer, the matrix layer and the fibre layer; the latter is made up of three layers. There is, in addition, a thin osmiophilic superficial membrane on the surface of the cuticle; this membrane is seen only with the electron microscope. It is shown that the major structural protein of the cuticle, although showing n… Show more

“…In Trichinella nativa and W. bancrofti (Hulinska and Shaihenov 1982;Arau´jo et al 1995), this layer has three subdivisions. The cortical layer of P. (S.) halitrophus has the aspect and electrondensity similar to that of Aspiculuris tetraptera (Anya 1966), even though the outer cortical layer of this nematode is thicker.…”

“…The eggshell, which protects the embryo, consists of three layers: an outer vitellin layer, a middle, chitinous layer and and inner phospholipid layer (Mansfield et al 1992). The cuticle is also composed of several layers: external epicuticle and cuticle, which is in turn divided into three layers: external cortex, median matrix and internal fibrous layers (Anya 1966;Mehlhorn 2001). Eggshells and cuticles are largely impermeable to chemical compounds, limiting the penetration of fixatives into eggs and larvae.…”

“…La cuticule est tr~s 6paisse (Fig. 1F), et ron peut y reconnaitre les 3 couches fibreuses distingu6s par Anya (1966) chez Aspiculuris tetraptera (Nitzsch, 1821); au niveau des ailes lat6rales et de l'area rugosa la couche fibreuse moyenne se diff6rencie: ses fibres se rassemblent en faisceaux dont la trame constitue un squelette fibreux (Fig. IF, G).…”
