The study of partial discharge inception voltage of mineral oil using needle - Plane electrode configuration

Abstract: The aim of this paper is to describe the feasibility study of using the needle -plane electrode system forPartial Discharge Inception Voltage (PDIV) measurement of mineral oil. This paper represents the experimental investigation of PDIV measurement of the mineral oil, Nynas 4000x, with the water content not more than 10 ppm under various tip radii of needle -plane electrode arrangements. The tungsten needle electrodes with the tip radius of 10µm, 20µm, and 40µmrespectively were used as the high voltage electr… Show more

“…Meanwhile, for rounded-cornered electrode, lower PDIV value might be attributed to the electric field enhancement at the oil small gap which also the location of the highest electric field. This phenomenon couldpossibly explain that PD in oil/pressboard interface begin in oil as PDIV depends directly on the maximum field [23].…”

“…To investigate the discharge behavior PDIV, PDEV and apparent value of PD in Pico coulombs are very important. PDIV and PDEV were measured according to IEC 60270 and 61294 standards [33,34]. PDIV value depends upon the rate of rise of voltage and PDEV depends upon both the time and decay rate of voltage.…”

“…In many case, Partial Discharge Inception Voltage is an alternatively important indicator that most researchers use for representing the integrity of the liquid insulation [5].The definition of Partial Discharge Inception Voltage of an insulating liquid according to the IEC 61294 is the lowest voltage at which an apparent charge occurs equal or exceeding 100 pC when the sample is tested under the specified conditions [6]. Some researchers report that the characteristic features of partial discharge phenomena greatly depend on experimental conditions such as electrode geometry, shape and amplitude of applied voltage, liquid nature and purity [7].…”
