The Tangential Nucleus Controls a Gravito-inertial Vestibulo-ocular Reflex

Abstract: Summary Background Whilst adult vertebrates sense changes in head position using two classes of accelerometer, at larval stages zebrafish lack functional semicircular canals and rely exclusively on their otolithic organs to transduce vestibular information. Results Despite this limitation, we find that larval zebrafish perform an effective vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) that serves to stabilize gaze in response to pitch and roll tilts. Using single-cell electroporations and targeted laser-ablations, we ident… Show more

“…Vertebrate eye movements occur in three dimensions (Fig 1A-C), which enables tracking of visual targets and stabilization of gaze with respect to world- or self-motion 11,12 . The connectivity and physiological function of individual nuclei comprising the hindbrain circuits generating these oculomotor behaviors have been extensively characterized 13-15 .…”

“…Horizontal and torsional/vertical eye movements emerge stereotypically in larval zebrafish (Fig. 1A-C) 11,12 . Quantitative measurements of these behaviors allow simultaneous assessment of multiple neuronal subgroups and connections in vivo and enable a comprehensive characterization of circuit development.…”

“…Moreover, our observations of the eyes represent the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR), a threeneuron circuit that has been previously described in various vertebrates, including larval zebrafish [122]. In this study, changing a larva's pitch resulted in compensatory eye movements, while we see rolling eye movements in response to a perceived roll of the larva's body.…”

“…Previous studies on acceleration sensing involve the development of a complex translational robot [121] or rotating platform [29,122], but such techniques are disruptive as the whole fish body is accelerated. This also implies that the behavioural response can be difficult to extract, as the fish body encounters changing forces due to changing water flow or gravity, which will affect the behavioural response too.…”
