The use of biochemical markers in the diagnosis of pelvic endometriosis

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate CA 125 II, C-reactive protein (CRP) and serum amyloid A (SAA) and anticardiolipin antibody (aCL) concentrations for the diagnosis of pelvic endometriosis. The study population consisted of 15 women without endometriosis, as confirmed by laparoscopy (group A), and 35 patients with pelvic endometriosis diagnosed by laparoscopy or laparotomy (group B). Group B patients were divided into those at stages I and II of the disease (BI/II) and those at stages III and IV (BIII/IV). … Show more

“…7 Some authors have described superficial endometriosis as a cyclical and normal phenomenon in women's lives, and have indicated that development and progression of this disease would only occur in some women as a result of immunological changes. 8,9 Thus, the low specificity of the diagnostic methods available, along with the severity of the disease, has motivated new studies to search for noninvasive diagnostic methods to detection endometriosis. 6 Serological testing for CA125 has been widely used to detect endometriosis and to monitor its progression.…”

The repor ted prevalence of endometriosis is 1%-20% in asymptomatic women, 10%-25% in infertile patients and 60%-70% in women with chronic pelvic pain [4][5] . Endometriosis can be divided into intra-and extraperitoneal sites.…”
