The Use of Complementary and Alternative Medicine in Children with Chronic Medical Conditions

Abstract: Disease progressiveness had no impact on CAM use, but severity within the CP group did. Complementing conventional medicine was the main motive. Understanding the reasons and patterns of use of CAM is beneficial in efforts to improve the care of children with chronic medical conditions.

“…7,13,14 In addition, some studies have not focused on complementary and alternative medicine use in children with specific chronic conditions, but rather studied use among children receiving services in special needs clinics. 10,14 With the increase in complementary and alternative medicine use among children with chronic disease or disability, improved understanding of types and patterns of such use for specific conditions is needed. This is particularly important as clinical trials of new potential therapies are being designed.…”

“…CAM can be defined as medical methods which are not included in the medical education curriculum or are not performed routinely in hospitals [3]. It also includes practices which have not been demonstrated to be clinically beneficial by randomized clinical studies and on which no consensus has been reached by the biomedical society [4]. There is a wide variation in the rate of CAM usage throughout the world ranging between 7% and 64% (mean 31.4%) [5,6].…”

“…Parents of children diagnosed with autistic spectrum disorders mainly refer to CAM to facilitate detoxification, to regulate the immune system and to modulate the gastro-intestinal functions [12,13]. For families of children with cerebral palsy, prevalence of CAM usage ranges from 27% to 35% [14,15] and the main scope is an integrative approach together with recommended conventional treatments [16]. CAM used by these families encompass massage, hyperbaric oxygen, hippotherapy, and osteopathy [14][15][16][17].…”
