The use of gentamicin‐impregnated collagen sponges (Garacol®/Duracoll®) in cochlear implant infections: our experience in four cases

Abstract: Keypoints• Nasal polyposis management is predominately medical, however, in those cases resistant to medical therapy, endoscopic nasal and sinus surgery is common place.• There is no standard practice dictating when to send nasal polyps as a histopathological specimen.• An incidence rate of 0.3% for inverted papilloma detection in patients undergoing ENS in our centre over the last 15 years was revealed, mirroring other centres.• Sending a histopathological sample on all patients who underwent nasal polypectom… Show more

“…[313] Collagen sponges loaded with recombinant human bone mor phogenetic protein 12 have been used successfully in rotator cuff surgery. [314] Gentamicin, Cefaclor or Ranalexin loaded col lagen sponges have been used successfully in diabetic foot, [315] cochlear, [316] sternal, [317] abdominal, [318] thoracic [319] and car diac [320] infections. A collagen/gelatin/basic fibroblast growth factor has shown promise in chronic skin ulcers treatment.…”

“…In all cases, any visible biofilm was mechanically removed, and gentamicin-impregnated collagen sheets were used to obtain a higher antibiotic concentration directly in the tissue surrounding the implant. 13,14 In the first patient, the Bonebridge had been implanted in the retro-auricular region using a classic pre-sigmoid approach. After oral antibiotic treatment, surgical debridement was performed, and a rotational skin flap was needed to close the defect (Figure 1).…”

“…However, this is not a common practice, and the validity of its benefits is debatable. There are few case reports as mentioned by Buijs et al 22 in their report of 4 cases in which salvage surgery using gentamicin sponges was found to prevent device explantation in severe soft tissue infection.…”
