The use of multivariate analysis for evaluating relationships among fat depots in heavy pigs of different genotypes

Abstract: The aim of the present work was to study distribution and reciprocal relationships of fat depots in heavy pigs of several genetic types. On 161 barrows and gilts belonging to four genetic types (Large White and relative crosses with Italian Landrace, Belgian Landrace and Duroc), slaughtered from 125 to 180 kg l.w., thickness, colour (C.I.E, L*, a*, b*) and weight of backfat and of kidney fat were determined. Subcutaneous and intermuscular fat of ham were weighed. On biceps femoris, semimembranosus and semitend… Show more

“…These include several techniques for meat yield estimation (both allometric and non-allometric) and a variety of utility indices designed to probe nutritional yield represented by living populations or archaeofaunas (e.g., Franci et al 2001;McKinney et al 2004;Outram and Rowley-Conwy 1998;. Since dietary reconstruction is at the core of zooarchaeological research, utilization of such techniques is recommended.…”

“…A way to address this matter is the utilization of multivariate analysis techniques (FRANCI et al, 2001); since, differently from the univariate analysis, they I Programa de Pós-graduação em Zootecnia (PPGZOO), Universidade Federal de Viçosa (UFV), 36570-900, Viçosa, MG, Brasil. “…Para estudos em que várias variáveis devam ser consideradas simultaneamente, as técnicas de análise multivariada são métodos estatísticos mais apropriados (Franci et al, 2001), pois combinam, simultaneamente, múltiplas informações provenientes de uma unidade experimental, que não são possíveis de serem obtidas com o uso da análise univariada (Viana et al, 2000).…”
