The use of standard deviation of X-ray diffraction lines as a measure of broadening in the Scherrer equation: a curve fitting method

Abstract: The use of standard deviation as a measure of line broadening in the Scherrer equation is justified on the grounds that, for commonly used approximating curves which can be fitted to X-ray line profiles, the line breadth at half intensity is directly proportional to the standard deviation of the fitted curve. If the crystallite size is known a priori, a standard deviation-width scaling function can be calculated; also some insight can be gained into the nature of the curve describing the diffraction profile. “…Altogether, the XRD pattern revealed the crystalline nature of TiO 2 NPs. The mean crystal size of the resultant mesoporous-TiO 2 NPs was 5.41 ± 1 nm, as calculated using Scherrer equation [54]. Our findings are highly consistent with previous data on TiO 2 NPs synthesized from C. longa extract [28,43].…”

“…We find that the low energy acoustical modes at 225 and 320 cm −1 soften as the temperature is increased from 900 to 1000 • C, the softening being attributed to a lesser N-deficiency in the latter. 60 The crystallite size of N-doped TiO 2 samples was estimated from half-peak widths in the XRD pattern by applying the Scherrer equation 43 and are given in Fig. 6.…”

“…Data were collected over the 2θ range 20-80 • with a step size of 0.02 • and a count time of 2 s. Crystallite size was calculated from XRD peak half-widths using the Scherrer equation. 43 Particle size and morphology of selected nanopowders were investigated using a JEOL 2010 transmission electron microscope (200 kV accelerating voltage). Samples were collected in carbon coated copper grids (Holey Carbon Film, 300 mesh Cu, Agar Scientific, UK) after being briefly dispersed ultrasonically (Kerry TM ultrasonic bath, 30 W) in 15 mL ethanol for 3 min.…”

“…Comparing with the standard pattern of Fe 3 O 4 power, the peaks of our samples were clearly broadened, implying the decrease of the particle size [30]. Using Scherrer equation [31] for the FWHM of these obvious diffraction traces (2 2 0), (3 1 1), (5 1 1) and (4 4 0), the average crystallite sizes are calculated and listed in Table 1, and also the lattice constants of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles are shown. It can be seen from Table 1, the particle sizes by different surfactant systems were close to each other of 14-16 nm, and the calculated lattice constants of our samples were consistent with the standard reverse spinel-type Fe 3 O 4 .…”
