The useful field of view test: Normative data for older adults

Abstract: The Useful Field of View test (UFOV) is increasingly used in clinical and rehabilitation settings. To date there have been no normative data for adjusted performance comparisons across demographically-similar, elderly peers. This study examined demographic and cognitive influences on the UFOV in a sample of 2759 participants (65-94 years of age). Performance was found to differ by age and education. Regression analyses examined the relative contributions of age, education, mental status, vision, and health to … Show more

“…A double staircase procedure adjusted the presentation duration (in intervals of 16.66 ms, starting at 250 ms) until six reversals (i.e., correct to incorrect response or vice versa) had been recorded, and threshold speed was calculated as the average of the presentation durations at the last four reversals. This subtest and version of the UFOV ® has been shown to be highly correlated with previous versions (Edwards et al, 2006 ), and to have similar high reliability and validity (Edwards et al, 2005 ).…”

“…We used the three UFOV subtests (UFOV 1 5 visual search and visual processing; UFOV 2 5 divided attention; UFOV 3 5 selective attention) and the UFOV RI to assess the visual-cognitive function Edwards et al, 2006). The three UFOV subtests measure performance, or the threshold exposure duration at which tasks are completed correctly, in milliseconds.…”

“…Visual selective attention and processing speed were assessed using the commercially available version of the useful field of view (UFOV ® ) test, which is PC-based and linked to a touch screen (17 in) for participant responses (Edwards et al, 2006). The test is performed binocularly and involves three increasingly difficult subtests involving stimulus identification, divided attention, and selective attention.…”
