The validity and reliability of the Sense of Coherence scale among Indian university students

Abstract: SOC-13 was found to be a reliable and valid instrument for measuring SOC in an Indian context. The present study contributes to health promotion in an Indian context, and could be useful even in other developing countries and for further research in India.

“…Nevertheless, recent research has focused on the study of the structure and content of sense of coherence. There are studies that support Antonovsky's idea of the sense of coherence as a general factor with three dimensions (Antonovsky, 1993;Drageset & Haugan, 2015;Klepp, Mastekaasa, Sørensen, Sandanger, & Kleiner, 2007;Rajesh et al, 2015;Söderhamn & Holmgren, 2004;Söderhamn, Sundsli, Cliffordson, & Dale, 2015;Spadoti Dantas et al, 2014). Söderhamn et al (2015) found evidence in a confirmatory factor analysis that confirmed the SOC-29 as one theoretical construct with three dimensions, comprehensibility, manageability, and meaningfulness.…”

“…Within just a few years, Antonovsky's sense of coherence scale had been used in "at least 33 languages in 32 countries with at least 15 different versions of the questionnaire" (Eriksson and Lindström, 2005). The stream of sense of coherence measurement papers has continued unabated (Rajesh et al, 2015).…”

“…Since the anchors of each item are different, a short instrument is warranted, particularly from a feasibility point of view. The psychometric properties of the SOC-13 have primarily been evaluated with classical statistical methods (i.e., Cronbach’s alpha, inter-item correlation and factor analysis) and in general populations of students [14] and active older people, as well as patients with chronic illnesses such as cancer [15] or cardiac disease [16]. The studies have generally concluded that the SOC-13 is a reliable and valid instrument.…”
