The Value of Web Log Data in Use-Based Design and Testing

Abstract: Web‐based logs contain potentially useful empirical data with which World Wide Web (Web) designers and design theorists can assess usability and effectiveness of design choices. Most Web design guidelines from artistic or usability principles feature no empirical validation, while empirical studies of Web use typically rely on observer ratings. Web server logs and client‐side logs can provide naturally‐occurring, unobtrusive usage data, partially amenable to normative use assessments but particularly useful in… Show more

“…The subcategory 'complete change' in the table, which is the most popular (23.9%) but not dominant, means that the revised query is completely different from the original query. To deal with this case, we might need to understand users' behaviors [19,20] and goals [21] in information retrieval, which are out of the scope of our research. Furthermore, around 22% query pairs in the 'others' category are reformulated with the combination of 'permutation' and one of the three basic reformulations.…”

“…In addition, the visiting behavior data could be recorded by the server as the web log [8], thus the web log could provide more reliable internet usage behavior data [3]. Web logs contain abundant information like users' IP address, domain, visiting time, URL, requesting status, the bit data returned or total data count, visited pages and browser's toolbar that used.…”

“…This could be achieved by storing logging data (e.g. Burton & Walther, 2001) alongside video or photographic records of pointing to or touching a particular response option. Crucially, a positive response consenting to participation can be reviewed and checked at the start of each contact if research takes place over time; just as with traditional methods for consent, options to dissent or withdraw from the research should also be displayed with equal valence and revisited on repeated contact (if the research design allows for this; Dockett & Perry, 2011).…”
