The vegetal biomembrane in the healing of chronic venous ulcers

Abstract: BACKGROUND: The vegetal biomembrane has been used to treat cutaneous ulcers. OBJECTIVES: To assess the role of the vegetal biomembrane on the chronic venous ulcers treatment compared to treatment with collagenase cream. METHODS: Fourteen patients were selected to be treated with vegetal biomembrane and 7 with Fibrase ® (CON-TROL), followed clinically and photographically by the Wound Healing Index by ImageJ during 120 days and biopsied on the 1 st and 30 th days for histological examination. RESULTS: The veget… Show more

“…It can be extracted from the culture of Clostridium histolyticum and is commonly used in therapies to remove cellular debris and extracellular tissue necrosis 19,20 . Its use in the treatment of wounds, ulcers and bedsores promotes new tissue formation and re-epithelialization and does not affect the healthy collagen and newly formed tissue 21 . Several pharmaceutical forms for its therapeutic application, such as cream, ointment and sterile unguent are available 22 .…”

“…Use of plant biomembranes in the treatment of venous ulcers in 21 patients demonstrated good results data from a rich exudation and debridement of the wound, increased tendency to angiogenesis, followed by re-epithelialization [63]. Also in this study the sample is small.…”

“…The treatment cost of the disease is generally high and results in significant social and economic impact owing to the lengthy process of the treatment and cicatrisation . The main treatments reported for venous leg ulcers are compression therapy (single layer, highly elastic or multilayer) and the traditional Unna boot .…”
