The Volcanic Hazard Maps Database: an initiative of the IAVCEI Commission on Volcanic Hazards and Risk

Abstract: In this work we present the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth’s Interior (IAVCEI) Commission on Volcanic Hazards and Risk (CVHR) Volcanic Hazard Maps Database and the accompanying volcanichazardmaps.org website. Using input from a series of IAVCEI CVHR Working Group on Hazard Mapping workshops, we developed a classification scheme and terminology framework for categorizing, discussing, naming, and searching for hazard maps. ≥ The database and website aim to serve as a resource… Show more

“…The aim of this initiative was to undertake a comprehensive review of past and current volcanic hazard mapping practices and associated lessons learned through a series of workshops and related initiatives with volcanologists and stakeholders interested in volcanic hazard maps. Nine workshops, one major database (the Volcanic Hazard Maps Database https:// volcanichazardmaps.org) and two publications (Lindsay et al, 2023a;Ogburn et al, 2023) later, we are still going strong. We are on track to publish the culmination of our efforts, the open access 'IAVCEI Companion to Volcanic Hazard Maps and Map Making: Considerations drawn from international community experience' next year.…”

“…Over the last 400 years, 13 eruptions worldwide caused over 3,000 victims each (Auker et al 2013). In the last decades, thanks to mapping and modeling efforts and the implementation of geographic information systems (GIS), major improvements have been done in volcanic hazard and risk assessments, both from a methodological point of view and also increasing the number of volcanoes studied (Jenkins et al 2014;Connor et al 2015;Ogburn et al 2023). Nevertheless, many active volcanoes still lack geochronological and volcano-physical studies which lead to a misrepresentation of the actual volcanic threat.…”
