The W7-X ECRH Plant: Recent Achievements

Abstract: Abstract. The 10 MW, 140 GHz, CW ECRH-plant for W 7-X is in an advanced state of commissioning and the installation was used to investigate advanced applications for extended heating-and current drive scenarios. The operation of the TED gyrotrons was recently extended to a 2 nd frequency of 103.6 GHz at reduced output power and first results are presented. An improved collector sweep system for the W7-X gyrotrons with enhanced power capability and smooth power distribution was developed, results are reported.

“…Electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH) is the main heating mechanism in Wendelstein 7-X [1][2][3]. The ECRH system is capable of delivering up to 5 MW at 140 GHz in the first operational phase OP1.1 and up to 9 MW in the next campaign OP1.2 scheduled for 2017.…”

“…1 Electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH) at 140 GHz is used as the main heating mechanism in the machine. [1][2][3][4] The ECRH system will deliver up to 10 MW of microwave power in continuous regime. 2 The ECRH system is a main source of stray radiation in Wendelstein 7-X and the contribution of ECE is negligible.…”
