The Wave Run-Up Simulator, Theory and First Pilot Test

Abstract: The idea of the Wave Run-up Simulator is based on the experiences with the Wave Overtopping Simulator. It is possible to simulate wave tongues overtopping a dike crest in reality. It must also be possible to simulate waves in the run-up and run-down zone of the seaward slope. This is the zone after waves have broken and when they rush-up the slope. The present paper describes this new idea of the Wave Run-up Simulator, why it is useful to develop the machine, to perform research with it and to develop a predic… Show more

“…Over an approximate 50m long stretch of embankment, two tests were performed on breach initiation due to wave overtopping using the 4m wide wave overtopping simulator developed by Van der Meer [5], [6] [7]. Also two breach initiation experiments had been performed using a 2m wide overflow simulator developed specifically for this experiment by Delft University of Technology.…”

“…More recently, the EurOtop manual (van der Meer et al, 2018) laid an extensive set of recommendations and experimentally based equations in order to functionnally model the overtopping phenomenon . Bergeijk et al (2019) also provided a more refined analytical model of overtopping using a set of coupled equations validated by numerical simulations and experiments.…”

“…On an approximate 50 m long stretch of embankment along the river Scheldt near Schellebelle in Belgium, two tests were performed on breach initiation due to wave overtopping and overflow using respectively the 4m wide simulators developed by Van der Meer (2012) and the 2m wide overflow simulator developed by Delft University of Technology (Van Damme et al, 2016). The purpose of this experiment was to obtain more knowledge about initial failure and breaching processes of dikes.…”
