The WEAVE observatory control system

Abstract: WEAVE is the next-generation spectroscopic facility for the William Herschel Telescope (WHT) 1,2 . WEAVE offers multi-object (1000 fibres) and integral-field spectroscopy at two resolutions (R ~ 5000, 20000) over a 2-deg field of view at prime focus and will mainly provide follow up of ground-based (LOFAR) and space-based (GAIA) surveys. The Observatory Control System (OCS) is responsible for providing the software control and feedback framework through which WEAVE will be operated. This paper summarizes the de… Show more

“…The embedded Low-Level Control Software (LLS) is designed to perform only simple and atomic operations on each device. It means that complex movements, as sequences of movements or 'recipes', are reserved for the High-Level Control Software (HLS), which is part of the Observatory Control System (OCS) software suite 3 . From the point of view of the HLS and the Engineering Control Panel application, the spectrograph is a black box controllable through a very simple interface: four global variables, or tags, are published in the PAC memory where they can be accessed by HLS using the standard PLCIO library.…”

“…The ACS will act the role of the TCS, the High-Level software [11], requesting actions to the PAC or Low-Level software. This software is developed in Labview and is using the communication interface described above.…”
