The Western blot is a highly sensitive and efficient technique in diagnosing allergy to wasp venom

Abstract: As allergy to wasp venom is a severe and potentially life threatening disease, false-negative test results need to be minimized. Therefore, the superiority of the Western blot with regard to sensitivity, specificity and overall efficiency makes this technique a valuable tool for its diagnosis.

“…Other in vitro tests When venom skin tests and the measurement of venom‐specific IgE antibodies in serum by RAST or an equivalent method yield negative results in patients with a history of a systemic anaphylactic sting reaction, additional in vitro tests may be used to demonstrate immunologic sensitization (like immunoblotting, the basophil histamine release test, basophil activation test and leukotrine release test) (122–126).…”

“…In particular, the usefulness of the cellular assays CAST-ELISA and Flow-CAST in the management of the HV allergy was investigated respectively in 3 and 5 patient control studies selected in this review [1][2][3][16][17][18]. In the CAST-ELISA studies were included 35 subjects with negative responses for at least one of the standard tests, and 2 additional subjects with negative results for both usual methods (see the Table 1).…”

“…A further in vitro technique recently used in the diagnosis of HV allergy is the Western blot [18]. In this method allergen extracts consist of a complex mixture of proteins which can be separated by molecular size on SDS-PAGE.…”

“…As previously reported, Western blot is a highly sensitive and efficient technique in detecting specific IgE [23-25]. C. pneumoniae (TW183) and C. trachomatis (serovar E) elementary bodies were purified by 20%–50% (vol/vol) Renografin gradient centrifugation as previously described [26] and normalized for protein content using the Bradford protein assay.…”
