The womb and the skin as false boundaries in perception–action and development: A response

Abstract

(2003) points out, we are attempting to establish meta-theoretical convergence between ecological psychology and transactionalism in much the same way that one would establish empirical convergence of experimental findings. It is indeed likely that common social contextual factors played a role in the metatheoretical convergence of these two approaches (i.e., both were American psychologies of the mid-20th century, see Schmuckler, 2003). However, we feel that even if such factors were the only reason for such convergence, the relative success of these theories outside of the social context in which they were established seems to warrant further comparison.We want to clarify that by no means are we attempting to develop an all-encompassing theory of perception, development, and behavior by creating a hybrid of ecological psychology and transactionalism.
