“…On the other hand, their proximity to the Atlantic coast would provide the opportunity for animals arriving in ships from other continents to be incorporated into the local gene pool. Particularly, it is known that in the journey between Portugal and Brazil, ships usually stopped in the Cape Verde islands for re-supplying, and animals were loaded there for the final stretch of the voyage, thus avoiding the occupation of essential space with animals, feed and water in the first part of the journey (Delgado et al 2000).
