Their Way of Writing: Scripts, Signs, and Pictographies in Pre-Columbian America. Edited by Elizabeth Hill Boone and Gary Urton. Washington, D.C.: Dumbarton Oaks Research Library and Collection, 2011. Pp. x, 412. Foreword. Introduction. Contributors. Index. $65.00 cloth.

Abstract: As die product of a 2008 symposium at Dumbarton Oaks that brought together scholars studying various types of writing and recording systems from both Mesoamerica and the Andes, this edited volume lays the groundwork for a methodological approach that respects the uniqueness of cultural tradition but also recognizes important common patterns that can help to enhance our ability to decipher and understand these diverse systems.
