Abstract: Ulcerative colitis is a disease of unknown aetiology in which colonic mucosal inflammation and ulceration result in rectal bleeding and diarrhoea. Most patients have relapses separated by long periods of disease inactivity, but a minority of patients have more chronic symptoms.
