Thermal and visual comfort analysis of adaptive vacuum integrated switchable suspended particle device window for temperate climate

Abstract: In this work, thermal and visual comfort of low heat loss switchable suspended particle device-vacuum (SPD-vacuum) glazing was investigated for less energy-hungry adaptive building's glazing or façade integration at temperate climate. This SPD-vacuum glazing had 38% visible transmittance in the presence of 110 V applied an alternating voltage and 2% visible transmittance in the absence of electrical power. Outdoor test cell characterisation was employed to measure the thermal and daylighting parameters of this… Show more

“…Windows are one of the weakest components in a building. It allows external heat to come inside (enhance the air condition load), internal heat to outside (enhance heating load) and offer visual connection to building interior to exterior [172][173][174][175][176][177][178][179][180][181][182][183][184][185]. Building window systems are affected by an overall heat transfer coefficient (U-value) and solar energy transmittance (g-value) [186][187][188][189].…”

“…CRI values over 80 are good while over 90 are considered to be excellent [6,7]. Good CCT and CRI indicate no significant colour difference between external daylight and the transmitted daylight through the window [55]. Lower the difference better the quality of light in to an indoor space which is an essential criteria for occupant's health, interpersonal relationships and aesthetic taste [56,57].…”

“…The transmitted sunlight through the transparent or semi-transparent window of a building significantly influences on the visual comfort of building occupant. Besides PCE, there are some other crucial parameters such as average visible transmittance (AVT), transparency colour perception [134][135][136], corresponding colour temperature (CCT) [137,138] and colour rendering index (CRI) [139] should be investigated for optimizing the semi-transparent PSCs. Usually, AVT range between 20%-30% is required for window applications.…”
