Thermal conductivity across the phase diagram of cuprates: Low-energy quasiparticles and doping dependence of the superconducting gap

Abstract: Heat transport in the cuprate superconductors YBa2Cu3Oy and La2−xSrxCuO4 was measured at low temperatures as a function of doping. A residual linear term κ0/T is observed throughout the superconducting region and it decreases steadily as the Mott insulator is approached from the overdoped regime. The low-energy quasiparticle gap extracted from κ0/T is seen to scale closely with the pseudogap. The ubiquitous presence of nodes and the tracking of the pseudogap shows that the overall gap remains of the pure d-wav… Show more

“…Specifically, both the EDC leading edge method and the symmetrized EDC methods have a short 'arc' near the node, in which the extracted gap value is either zero or negative (which is often artificially set to zero). Directly observing the sharp cusp of the d-wave gap so near the node confirms the findings of other probes such as thermal conductivity 27 . By comparing Fig.…”

“…The data below 0.35 K are fitted to κ/T = a + bT α−1 , in which the two terms aT and bT α represent contributions from fermionic zero-energy excitations and phonons, respectively [37,38]. Because of the specular reflections of phonons at the sample surfaces, the power α in the second term is typically between 2 and 3 [37,38]. The fitting gives κ 0 /T = -0.003 ± 0.004 mW K −2 cm −1 and α = 2.94.…”

“…Cooper pairs are pre-formed at a particular temperature T * > T c (pseudogap temperature) above the superconducting dome in the underdoped region [9,10] (where T c is smaller than the higher T c possible), and they undergo a Bose-Einstein Condensation (BEC) as temperature is lowered [11,12]. There are many other characteristics, but of special interest to us are some recently reported experimental results: the modification of the size of the lattice with oxygen doping [13]; the notorious increase of the superconducting gap magnitude [14] and the dramatic drop of the Fermi temperature T F when doping is diminished [15]. These features are of crucial importance in our results.…”

“…For f = 1 we recover the case where all pairable fermions participate in the boson gas. Additional experimental parameters of YBa 2 Cu 3 O 6.80 that we use in our calculations are: the critical temperature [13] T cexp = 88 K; the superconducting parameter [14] ∆ 0 = 50 meV; the crystallographic [13] c = 11.71Å, giving a = c/2 = 5.855Å and a/λ 0 = 0.233. Finally, we take the height of the jump ∆C/T c ≃ 20 mJ/mol K 2 from the data published in Ref.…”
