“…Especially, vertically cracked and columnar structured coatings with high strain tolerance make SPS a great potential process to apply high‐performance TBCs. As first reported by Mahade et al, multilayer high strain tolerant columnar GZO TBCs has been successfully deposited with SPS. This has proven that SPS is a practical process to deposit high strain tolerance GZO coating.…”

“…2,6,10 Gadolinium zirconate (Gd 2 Zr 2 O 7 , GZO) as a very promising top coat material has attracted a lot of interest for the last two decades. It has a high melting point (2570°C), 6,11 very good phase stability, 12 a considerably low thermal conductivity (1.2 W/mK), 13,14 excellent calcium-magnesium-alumino-silicates (CMAS) infiltration resistance [15][16][17] and a high CTE (10.5 × 10 −6 /K) 18 which is close to that of YSZ. However, the relatively low fracture toughness of GZO which facilitates crack propagation is its drawback for the applications as TBC.…”

“…This led to the use of multi-layer coatings with YSZ as the inner layer (on top of the bond coat) and gadolinium zirconate coating as the outer layer. It has also been shown that these multi-layer coatings may provide better thermal cycling life compared to single-layer YSZ coatings [26]. These results show that the focus of research on new TBC materials may shift more towards pyrochlores.…”

“…16. with double layer TBC (c), which improve the possibility of working in higher operational temperature [87] Intensive researches carried out by Mahade et al [88,89] concern double (DL) and triple layer (TL) thermal barrier coating systems. In DL they propose in ceramic top coat first layer as YSZ and second one from pyrochlore, in this case gadolinum zirconate (GZ).…”
