Thermal Performance Evaluation of Window Shutters for Residential Buildings: A Case Study of Abu Dhabi, UAE

Abstract: The research is aimed at comparing residential building windows’ thermal performance with and without thermal shutters, and at examining thermal shutters’ performance upon being insulated with various types of insulation, glares, outside temperatures, and solar radiation. As an example, one case study based out of the UAE is chosen, covering the status of the housing typology and traits of building energy consumption. The study uses the primary tool of computer simulation software “DesignBuilder” to examine th… Show more

“…From this investigation, beneficial effects of double-glazing of the window panes as the most effective solar radiation penetration control strategy (through the openings), followed by integration of fixed sun shading elements on the exterior parts of the building are established. These research outputs align with the findings of [7], [12], [17], [24], [25], [36], [37], among others. It is therefore advised that adoption of double or more layers of glass panes in controlling indoor solar radiation penetration should be encouraged.…”

“…The software facilitated the creation of building geometry, definition Based on the architectural drawing, the selected villa is modelled in DesignBuilder based on architectural drawings and data on typical residential building construction in Qatar (Figure 5). Envelope components like walls, roof, fenestration, etc., are defined based on typical assemblies and materials identified from literature [50][51][52][53][54][55][56] and listed in Table 2. Cooling and ventilation is provided by a centralized HVAC system with parameters set based on Code for Energy Conservation in Residential Buildings in Qatar [57].…”

“…This ensures ease of comprehensive simulation process. DesignBuilder uses construction components to model the conduction of heat through walls, windows, roofs, ground and other opaque parts of the building envelope as the physical properties of each element have been pre-defined for broad simulation processes (DesignBuilder 2023;Abdullah et al, 2022…”
