Thermally Crosslinked Functionalized Polydicyclopentadiene with a High Tg and Tunable Surface Energy

Abstract: Polydicyclopentadiene (PDCPD) is a tough, heavily crosslinked thermoset polymer that has high heat, chemical, and impact resistance coupled with a low density. Current limitations to the broader industrial application of PDCPD include its low surface energy and lack of chemical tunability. Here, we report the first example of a polymer derived from a carboxyl-functionalized dicyclopentadiene monomer and its subsequent thermal crosslinking. The resulting material has the highest glass-transition temperature rep… Show more

“…This tendency is likely to be caused by the increase of cross-linking density as more cyclopentene rings react. In the literature, the T g of polyDCPD generally ranges from 53-165 C. 52,53 Hence, our intermediate T g value agrees with a signicant fraction of non-reacted cyclopentene rings as evidenced by FTIR and solid-state NMR. The TGA traces in Fig.…”

“…As expected, DCPD exhibited a much slower polymerization rate compared to NB. [53][54][55] To increase reactivity and achieve a cross-linked structure unattainable with NB only, we proposed a copolymerization of DCPD with NB. 13,54 As shown on the same plot, a mixture of DCPD/NB (50/50 mol%) resulted in intermediate polymerization rates and almost full conversion aer 30 min irradiation.…”

“…The metathesis of DCPD with ruthenium metathesis catalysts is well‐known and has been investigated in detail . However, the reported metathesis reactions of CPD and other compounds containing conjugated double bonds are rare .…”

“…17 To address the low surface energy of PDCPD, and to bestow additional function to the polymer, we installed a C-linked ester group on the dicyclopentadiene monomer. [18][19][20] The esterfunctionalized monomer ( f DCPD) engages in Ru-catalyzed ROMP similarly to the parent dicyclopentadiene, to afford a linear telechelic polymer that can then be thermally cured to provide a densely crosslinked, functionalized form of polydicyclopentadiene that we call f PDCPD (Fig. 1).…”
