Thermo- and light-triggered reversible interconversion of dysprosium–anthracene complexes and their responsive optical, magnetic and dielectric properties

Abstract: [DyIII(SCN)3(depma)2(4-hpy)2] (1) shows reversible thermo-induced phase transition associated with thermochromism and dielectric anomaly and photo-induced dimerization with synergistic switching of luminescence, magnetic and dielectric properties.

“…The strong CF splitting existing in 1R/1S and 2R/2S is evident from the slight decrease of χ M T values on cooling (Figures S15) and the large separation between the ground and excited states (vide infra). For 1R/1S, a slight increase of χ M T values below 10 K was observed, which was attributed to the presence of weak ferromagnetic intermolecular interactions [66][67] while a rapid increase of χ M T values at low temperatures for 3R/3S indicated the existence of intramolecular ferromagnetic coupling. Ab initio studies show that the exchange interaction is dominated by ferromagnetic dipolar coupling due to the short intramolecular Dy(III)•••Dy(III) distance and the colinear alignment of the principal magnetic axes (Table S14, Figure S29).…”

“…S7 and S8, ESI†). Taking 1 as an example, the χ M T values gradually decreased to a minimum value of 13.23 cm 3 K mol −1 as the temperature was decreased to 40 K followed by a slight increase as the temperature was further decreased to 2 K, suggestive of the presence of weak ferromagnetic intermolecular interactions 19,25,26 as verified by the intermolecular interaction zJ ′ of 0.05 cm −1 (Fig. S7, ESI†).…”

“…5 Among them, anthracenyl complexes (An-MOCs, An = anthracenyl) are of particular interest due to their abundant photophysical properties and ability to undergo reversible [4 + 4] photocycloaddition reaction. 6–11 However, notwithstanding the many reported An-MOCs, those showing reversible photocycloaddition reactions are rare. 10,11 The main obstacle is the stacking of the anthracene units, which must be a face-to-face π–π interaction with a separation of less than 4.2 Å to satisfy Schmidt's rule for photodimerization, 12 which is not easily achieved in An-MOCs.…”
