To decarbonize Europe achieving almost zero emissions in 2050, more stringent regulations are going to be applied. Particularly, Europe is investing in the emissions’ re-duction of buildings (existing and new ones), and strong improvements in energy performance of building are expected according to novel energy performance of building directive (at last phase of negotiation). At the same time, the production and use of fluorinated gases will be further reduced with the novel F-Gas regulation (under Parliament approval). New F-Gas will affect remarkably the small size, air-to-air split systems for air-conditioning, since no fluorinated gases will be used after 2035, forcing manufacturers to the use of natural refrigerants. Being propane the most efficient among the non-toxic natural refrigerants, less refrigerant would be charged into systems according to current safety standards: this would potentially reduce the heat transfer surfaces and, consequently, for the same capacity, the energy efficiency or, for the same efficiency, the capacity would decrease. In this paper, some scenario analyses, complying with actual and future plausible dispositions, are presented, in order to showing the margins for de-sign and commenting criticalities. In particular, the optimal design options are proposed for different fluids, in terms of costs vs energy performance, under representative cases, in terms of weather conditions and building types in Italy (existing ones and new ones respecting high-efficiency standards, trying to meet the requirements of hypothesized national law following the draft of the novel EPBD).

This paper presents a detailed analysis of the research into modern thermal energy storage systems dedicated to autonomous buildings. The paper systematises the current state of knowledge concerning thermal energy storage systems and their use of either phase change materials or sorption systems; it notes their benefits, drawbacks, application options, and potential directions for future development. The rapid proliferation of studies on installation systems, new composites, and phase change materials requires a systematisation of the subject related to short- and long-term thermal energy storage in building structures. This paper focuses on assessing the validity of the current improved thermal energy storage solutions for buildings with very high energy efficiency standards and buildings that are energy-independent. The paper presents the current results of the energy and economic analyses of the use of heat storage systems in buildings. This paper shows the optimal heat storage systems for autonomous buildings. Moreover, it also shows other potential ways to develop systems and composites capable of storing heat in autonomous buildings.

This article aims to analyze the attitude of Generation Z representatives from Romania regarding the improvement in energy efficiency and decarbonization through the utilization of modern integrated technologies such as heat pumps, thermal energy storage, and smart control systems. It uses primary data from a questionnaire-based survey conducted between March and June 2023, with 389 valid responses, for the following purposes: (1) to analyze the attitude of young respondents towards the utilization of sustainable modern integrated technologies, such as heat pumps, in order to increase energy efficiency and reduce carbon footprints; (2) to identify the factors that may influence their attitude regarding these technologies; (3) to understand the influence that the resulting factors may exert on the attitude towards utilization of heat pumps, implicitly leading to energy efficiency improvement and decarbonization in Romania; and (4) to formulate policy recommendations for improving energy efficiency and stimulating decarbonization in Romania. This study employs various descriptive statistics, factor analysis, and multiple regression. The results show that there are six categories of factors influencing the attitude of Generation Z representatives, with “Drivers for improving energy efficiency” along with “Traditional measures for improving energy efficiency” having the largest influence on driving a positive attitude toward energy efficiency improvement and decarbonization. The main policy recommendation derived from this study refers to developing policies and strategies that incentivize citizens not only to have a positive attitude toward energy efficiency and decarbonization through the utilization of heat pumps but also trigger concrete action for installing heat pump technology. Another recommendation concerns the further development and expansion of national and local programs for insulating the external surface of buildings and the replacement of windows and exterior doors that do not have thermal insulation. The third major recommendation is related to awareness creation campaigns among the population about modern measures for improving energetic efficiency, such as heat pumps.
