Thermoresponsive Shape‐Memory Hydrogel Actuators Made by Phototriggered Click Chemistry

Abstract: In article number 2001683, David Díaz Díaz and co‐workers present a series of strong hydrogel membranes prepared via Cu(I)‐catalyzed photo‐click polymerization using a glycerol ethoxylate core. These materials display thermoresponsive and shape‐memory actuation based on a judicious hydrophilic‐hydrophobic molecular balance, and present a high potential for biomedical applications including drug delivery and artificial muscles.

“…Moreover, the cysteine (Cys) containing disulfide bond ( Yang et al, 2015 ; Wang et al, 2020 ) was reasonably chosen to possess the GSH-responsive peculiarity. On the other hand, a polymer pre-monomer containing the photo-click functional groups, including methacryloyl (MA) ( Maiti et al, 2020 ) and tetrazolium (Tet) ( Wu et al, 2019 ; Liu et al, 2021 ), was designed and synthesized to obtain a controllable nano-delivery system.…”

“…Because of their unique shape-recovery function, SMPs have broad application prospects in many fields, including biological medical devices, aerospace engineering, textiles, and anti-counterfeiting [ 4 , 5 , 6 ]. Thermally induced SMP is an important branch of shape-memory polymer stimulation that has been widely studied and has many industrial applications [ 7 , 8 , 9 ]. As an important component of thermally induced SMPs, trans-1,4-polyisoprene (TPI) and its composites have been used in biomedical and protective equipment applications due to their fast deformation speed, high recovery rate, and high recovery accuracy [ 10 ].…”

“…In our previous report we have reported thermoresponsive hydrogel membranes by combining glycerol ethoxylate based trialkyne and different diazide monomers using photo‐ triggered Cu(I)‐catalysed click chemistry [22] . In this present work we tried to avoid the extra synthetic step which was followed in the previous report (to make different diazide and dialkyne) and showed a very easy and straightforward method to synthesize novel thermoresponsive polyurethane from glycerol ethoxylate, which is a tri‐arm PEG and dicyclohexyl diisocyanate in a one pot system.…”
