Thermosensitive Hydrogels–a Potential Carrier for the Delivery of Drugs and Macromolecules

Abstract: In this review, the authors have discussed scientific advances in thermosensitive hydrogels over the past two decades. The ability of the thermo-sensitive hydrogel to undergo rapid changes with response to temperature makes it an attractive candidate for many biomedical applications such as targeted drug delivery, wound healing, soft contact lenses, sensors, tissue regeneration, gene, and protein delivery. This review aims to deliver a brief overview of gelation properties, merits, and demerits of various natu… Show more

“…Accuracy data for IOP biosensors are summarized in Figure 10. On the supply side, recent innovations in both CLS [114,[145][146][147][148][149][150][151] and hydrogel contact lens technology [96,152,153] have enabled advanced biosensors to engage in accurate, safe, and clinically actionable 24 h monitoring of IOP in both normal and glaucomatous eyes. With respect to the fungibility of CLS data with GAT measurements, Szurman and colleagues [133] measured a mean difference in IOP of −0.2 mmHg between patients using an implantable CLS and those subject to GAT measurement, which the authors categorized as "excellent" and in excess of the instrumental agreement between non-biosensorbased IOP measurement modalities such as GAT as compared to rebound tonometry.…”

“…Critical to IOP measurement accuracy-and to the rationale for IOP biosensors itselfare advancements in hydrogel technology that have enabled the manufacture of soft, comfortable, and sensitive inductor-capacitor-resistor pressure sensors in the form of contact lenses [96,152,153]. Hydrogels are 3D polymers whose biocompatibility with human tissue make them optimal carriers for miniaturized instruments, such as IOP sensors [152].…”

“…11 Thermo-sensitive hydrogels form a three-dimensional network structure through chemical cross-linking or physical interaction of macromolecules in aqueous solution, which is highly porous in the swelling state and can wrap drugs, liposomes, biomolecules, etc. 12 Thermo-sensitive hydrogel for injection is a liquid solution with good fluidity at room temperature and becomes a semi-solid gel state at 37°C in the physiological environment. The drug is dissolved or suspended in the solution that can form hydrogel, which can be used for local tissue and minimally invasive injection.…”

“…Other advantages of using bubbles as templates for the porous structure are that adding reagents is unnecessary in the post-treatment process, and the preparation process is straightforward. Rapidly responsive hydrogels could be active in designing new hemostatic agents [40] and drug delivery systems [41]. In this context, the porous structure enabled by bubble water could provide a versatile platform for such responsiveness [42].…”
