Abstract: Wireless communication has become an intrinsic part of modern implantable medical devices (IMDs). Recent work, however, has demonstrated that wireless connectivity can be exploited to compromise the confidentiality of IMDs' transmitted data or to send unauthorized commands to IMDs-even commands that cause the device to deliver an electric shock to the patient. The key challenge in addressing these attacks stems from the difficulty of modifying or replacing already-implanted IMDs. Thus, in this paper, we explor… Show more

“…If the server is accidentally opened to remote access (#3 failed), the attacker can still only access that one user's data. Other innovative solutions include delegating security to a personal base station to use a novel radio design that can act as a jammer-cumreceiver (Gollakota et al, 2011).…”

“…Several wearable NFC-based sensors can be found in the literature that exploits this fact. In addition, the short read range inherent in the NFC technology provides a degree of privacy and security over undesired access to sensible information by nearby third parties [58,59]. Prototypes of patches to perform measurements of body temperature based on commercial NFC IC can be found in [52,53].…”

“…The work of Halperin et al [4] is considered to be the pioneer work in security analysis of IMDs, followed by different research activities providing security for IMD devices [5]. Most of the research is focused on mitigating the security risks via providing different encryption mechanisms to protect data between a sender and legitimate nodes [6,7,8]. In conventional wireless networks, security is considered to be an independent feature with no or little connection to other tasks of a communication network.…”
