Thickness Measurements and Optical Characterization of Thin Polymer Films

Abstract: Polyphenylene oxide (PPO) films have been investigated as protective coatings and as selective inhibitors to permeants.1,2,3 These films have been shown to be passivating materials and therefore are potentially interesting for a variety of applications. It is important for further applications to be able to measure the thickness of thin films by nondestructive techniques, which is the subject of this report. In this study PPO films of various thicknesses were electrodeposited on highly oriented pyrolytic graph… Show more

“…These are the 4f doublet and the Au 4d 5/2 peak. This indicates that films of poly (1,3-dihydroxybenzene) produced in the manner described above must be very thin (of about three to six nm in thickness [42]). Were the films any thicker than this then the overlying polymer layer would almost certainly obscure the Au 4d peak.…”

“…Ellipsometry measurements were performed on ITO samples in the range from 2.1 to 4.1 eV (300-660 nm), at a 708 incident angle in a previously described custom-built ellipsometer [19]. The results may be expressed in terms of the complex dielectric function (e*) and refractive index (N*), obtained directed from the complex reflection coefficient (q) [20] eT…”
