Thickness Optimisation of Sealed Seams in Respect of Insulating Properties

Abstract: The main goal is to determine the optimal thickness of material layers in seams in respect of their insulating properties. The impact of structure on heat insulation and moisture resistance is also described. The insulation was analysed for different types of sealed seams which are typically used to connect the different parts of clothing. The coupled heat and mass transport problem is defined by the transport equations and a set of boundary and initial conditions. Based on the variational approach, we introdu… Show more

“…The mathematical model includes the heat transfer equation and a set of conditions [2]. The impact of seams on heat insulation and moisture resistance is analyzed in a previous paper [3] for different types of sealed seams, typically used to connect the parts of clothing. The coupled transport is defi ned by the heat and mass transport equations and a set of conditions [4,5].…”

“…The optimization procedure is usually solved using the optimization functional in general form, the stationarity of Lagrange functional and first-order sensitivity approach [19]. The set of structural parameters (design variables) can be optimized applying the objective functional of unequivocal physical interpretation in case of optimal thickness [20,21] or insulating properties of seams [22]. The same approach can be applied to solve coupled thermo-mechanical problems [23] or identify the structural shape or material properties [24,25].…”
