Thin film composite membranes with desirable support layer for MeOH/MTBE pervaporation

Abstract: A comprehensive study was performed on a new application of thin film composite membranes and selecting a stable sublayer for them as pervaporation membranes in organic solvent separation. For this purpose, four different polymeric sublayers of polyethersulfone (PES), cellulose acetate, polyacrylonitrile, and polyetherimide were prepared, and the interaction of methanol (MeOH) and methyl tert butyl ether (MTBE) with them was investigated. The contact angle results, scanning electron microscopy images, and swel… Show more

“…The permeation flux ( J , g m −2 h −1 ) and PV separation factor of ethanol–water ( α ) were calculated from the following equations: J=QAt where Q (g) is the total mass of permeate collected in t hours and A (m 2 ) denotes the effective area of the membrane; and α=YAXBXAYB where X A and X B represent the ethanol and water concentrations (wt%) in the feed solution, respectively, and Y A and Y B represent the ethanol and water concentrations (wt%) in the permeate.…”

“…Alibakhshian et al [ 52 ] obtained polyamide by interfacial reaction of m- phenylenediamine with trimesoyl chloride and used it as a thin selective layer for composite membranes with different types of substrates: polyethersulfone, polyetherimide, cellulose acetate and polyacrylonitrile. The authors assumed that the selection of a suitable substrate is able to provide high performance.…”
