Thin Multilayer Films of Weak Polyelectrolytes on Colloid Particles

Abstract: We report the formation of poly(acrylic acid) (sodium salt) (PAA) and poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) multilayers on polystyrene (PS) and melamine formaldehyde (MF) colloid particles by the layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly technique. The use of different solution processing conditions (e.g., pH and ionic strength) was found to have a pronounced effect on film growth, with the degree of dissociation of both polyelectrolytes (PEs) playing an important role for regular PAA/PAH multilayer growth. To retain collo… Show more

“…AHA imparts a negative charge on the surface of the NPs, as confirmed by the strongly negative z-potential at basic pH values ( Figure 2). The isoelectric point (pI) of 4.5 obtained for the AHA-modified LaPO 4 NPs is close to values reported for particles bearing carboxy groups, [21,22] which suggests that the amine group of AHA is attached to the particle surface, whereas the carboxy group is directed into the surrounding solution. Modification of the LaPO 4 NPs with AHA serves two important purposes.…”

“…3. After post-treating with NaClO solution, the characteristic peaks at 1555 and 1401 cm −1 , which were due to the -COO − group [24,36,37], sharply weakened. As a comparison, the peak at 1732 cm −1 attributed to the -C O group became much stronger [11,38].…”

“…A growth increment of 2 nm per dipping cycle compares well to other reports on (PAA/ PAH) n films under comparable conditions. [22,23] This means that the observed film growth was notably slower when using the standard ESA procedure with rinsing steps, compared to without rinsing. It is noteworthy that, after the deposition of three layer pairs on top of the core film, the mechanical stability during the drying process was increased.…”
